FAQ: Phoenix Covenant - Tactics Battle Card Game
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

How many players is Phoenix Covenant for?

Two-players for standard-mode head-to-head. Other game modes are being designed to support at least 2-4 players. Team-play is on the way, but because we have so much to focus on for this campaign and to fulfill the initial ruleset, we’ll need your support to raise development and production funds for more modes! Are the decks divided into individual Faction decks?

No. You can pick and choose from a (current) collection of 4 Factions (The Midlands, Tir na Ten, The North, The Ravaged Lands) and craft a deck how you like! If you choose to make an all-Midlands deck, have at it, but we are not restricting you to build Faction-specific decks. Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

Cool tabletop. Will there be a digital game?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: we’ll need your support in order to get it released faster than our current plan. As a coder myself, dev’ing digital games while also producing tabletop games is no short order, especially when the digital gameplay should be smooth, reliable, not crash, and be totally awesome every step of the way. There are two really cool Stretch Goals deeper in the dungeon, so share this campaign with friends and let’s make it happen! Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

How long do games usually take?

We’ve got great data on this. Games range from 25 minutes to 45 minutes on average. Our shortest game so far was a beautifully-constructed rush that took about 11 minutes. To be fair, we’ve noticed that players who are brand new will take that usual “learning a new euro/strategy game” amount of time (about 60 minutes and some change) because they read the cards, and delve quickly into the depths of the strategy in the game. Generally speaking, how many cards in a deck?

While our prototype pre-constructed decks are around 45 cards, generally speaking decks should be from 35 to 50 cards. There are also structures that go into a Side-Deck (see the Manual) that up this range by 5 on average. Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

Will there be card sleeves? How can I protect my awesome deck?

As gamers ourselves, sleeving options were quite literally the second thing we thought about after deciding to design a card game. We talked early on with suppliers and manufacturers to check into it. It’s possible, and especially if we can get a great following, we’ll try to get sleeves out earlier than expected! Square cards? What are their dimensions?

Yep. Beautifully square. Current prototypes are 3.25 inches square, but a) we’re hand-cutting them so there’s a bit of wiggle-room with that and b) we’re still going a lot of user-interface/card-look-and-feel changes and tweaks, so that number isn’t 100% set. What are alt-version cards? How are they different than alt-art, etc?

Alternate-version (alt-version) cards are cards either with different base abilities (note: saying “different” not “better” or “stronger”) than the initial version of a card or with different implementations of certain mechanics than the initial version of a card. For instance, the standard card offers the ability to immobilize a unit; an alt-version of that same card could be one that offers the ability to pay some amount of mana and reduce the movement value of a unit by 1. Will exclusives (and stretch goal unlocks) be available to the WARRIORS (2x game box) level?

Yes and yes! Anything that applies to a single game box (or scales with a single game box) applies double to the 2x game box / WARRIORS level. So, since there is at least one KS exclusive card offered in the base box, there will be two (of the same card) sent to those who got the double-box set. As for the new reward levels, just email or message me (Adam) and I’ll get you the price-differences to get 2x of the extras at those levels. Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

Can you explain the other stretch goal tracks?

Sure! There are two additional stretch goal tracks, one for Facebook/FB likes of our page (at facebook.com/phoenixcovenant) and one for overall KS Backers. In each, we’re trying to grow the size of our community, because the more the merrier - more competition, more friends playing the game, more community around the game, and also more tournaments hosted. Simply get friends to like our page on Facebook or ask friends to support our campaign and back this project. As we hit the goals, everyone at the “PLEDGED” level and above (all who are getting full game boxes) will get the cards mentioned at a particular goal level. Note: we will clearly mark unlocked goals by placing one of our mini 8-bit avatars in the room/on-the-platform and putting checkmarks next to the achieved goal. What is a Champion Unit / What are all the Unit or Card types?

Overall, there are Units, Spells, and Structures. See the downloadable manual for more details, but generally speaking, Units move about the field and do damage to the enemy/opposing player and opposing units while Spells are one-off effect-makers and Structures are mostly strategic locations that can be constructed on the field to support an army. Units usually come in three flavors - Common Units, Commander Units, and Champion Units. Common units are all types of units that are not Commanders or Champions. Commanders can “gate” or forward-summon units to the field from your Hand, according to which squares they “add” (or make legitimately into gating squares) to the field. Champion units are usually more powerful than the power of units at the same Tier value, but many require other trade-offs to check how strong they really are. For instance, some Champions may require you to not gain any resources on a turn in order to bring that Champion into play. Similarly, there may be Player Life reduction to use a certain powerful Champion. Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

What’s a Crowning Moment of Awesome?

The glory of a crowning moment of awesome is - and please forgive the A-Team reference, I loved that show - “when a plan comes together” when you’ve been able to turn the tide of a battle or simply pull off a super-sweet move. We’ve had them before, and we love them, so that’s why we’re trying to make great combos and synergies in Phoenix Covenant. Last updated: Mon, Nov 17 2014 3:47 am EST

Details on the Tournament in a Town of Backers’ Choice

We will be doing a tournament in a town that you all choose, but for the sake of ease of access, and logistics to make sure we can a) provide food, b) provide experts/ourselves, and c) make it easiest for you all to travel there, we will provide a list of towns/cities for you to choose from. BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
